Porsche History | Indianapolis, IN

Porsche is one of the few performance auto manufacturers that have not been incorporated into a larger brand. As a result, Porsche has maintained a name for itself as an original and innovative company that provides incredible precision to detail without sacrificing quality. Since 1931, Porsche has been redefining the auto industry one design at a time, and we at Coast to Coast Imports couldn’t be prouder to offer one of the top sports car brands on the market.

Early Years

Ferdinand Porsche began as an engineer for Daimler-Benz (which would become Mercedes-Benz), later establishing an independent design and engineering firm in 1931 to create what would become known as the Volkswagen Beetle. By 1948 Ferdinand and his son (Ferdinand Jr., called “Ferry”) had set up their first shop with around 200 workers. In its early years, the company was especially well known for using four-wheel-drive gasoline/electric hybrid powertrains to compete at the Auto Union Grand Prix.

Middle Years

In the mid-1950s, Porsche began to develop its own engines, as well as a range of performance and racing models. By 1964, the Porsche 911 was introduced, a still-iconic car that has been revamped over several decades; nevertheless, even contemporary versions of the 911 share design cues from the original. The 924 was one of the first front-engine models, introduced in 1974, and the 928 had that first V8 engine. In the 1990s, the company introduced the mid-engine Boxster as well.

Present

Porsche currently dominates the sports car market when it comes to prestige and desirability. The brand name is often synonymous with high-class performance, and the company has also worked hard to create some truly remarkable modern designs. For example, the Porsche Cayenne SUV was introduced in 2003 to cater to a growing demand in the US market, and in 2015 the company opened the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta, GA (a magnificent $100-million facility). There’s also a new Digitization Competence Center and Digital Lab, both of which were founded in 2016.
